Havana’s Juan Manuel Marquez pediatric hospital received on Wednesday a donation from the UN Children Fund (UNICEF) consisting of tablets and ampules of the drug known as dexamethasone, an action aim at assisting Cuba’s efforts against the COVID-19 pandemic.

EMCOMED (Empresa Comercializadora de Medicamentos) plays a key role in the distribution of anti-COVID-19 vaccines, according to Ángel Luis Chacón, director of the BioCubaFarma group organization said on a TV appearance.

Public Health and Education authorities issued an update Tuesday on the progress of the anti-COVID-19 vaccination process in Cuba, especially among children and adolescents expected to start the oncoming new school year.

Dr. Jose Angel Portal Miranda, Cuban Minister of Public Health, discussed on Tuesday the epidemiological situation in the municipality of Banes, the second with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the province of Holguin in recent days.

The ongoing nationwide COVID-19 vaccination of children and adolescents in Cuba is not mandatory, said the head of the National Pediatrics Group with the Cuban Health Ministry, Lissette Lopez.

The head of the Cuban Immunization Program, Lena Lopez announced the completion of the administration of a first dose of the locally developed COVID-19 vaccines to a first group of students including high school 12 graders and others in the final stages of technical-professional education and pedagogy.

Following a visit to Pinar del Rio, the province with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country, Public Health Minister Jose Angel Portal Miranda said that changing the epidemiological situation requires everybody’s engagement and awareness.
In the last 15 days, over 15,600 people have tested positive in this province, for an incidence rate of more than 2,600 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest in Cuba today.
