Russian Oil Shipment Backs Cuban Energy Output

Havana, March 31 (ACN) Some 100 thousand metric tons of oil brought to Cuba by the Russia’s Anatoly Kolodkin tanker on Tuesday will support the performance of the island’s electric system and other economic activities for at least 10 days, according to the Energy and Mines Ministry.

Following the refining of the oil, the first products will begin to be distributed during the second half of April, though they will not meet the local fuel demand.

Diesel, fuel oil, liquified petroleum gas and gasoline will be obtained out of the refining process, according to the Cuban Petroleum Union (CUPET).

CUPET deputy director Irenaldo Perez said that Diesel will be used for distributed power generation and crucial economic activities. Fuel oil will be burned by powerboats and thermal power plants in the localities of Mariel and Moa, while LPG will be distributed to hospitals and other critical centers to cook meals. Some amount of gasoline will also be produced to relieve the current shortage of that product, the official said.
