Cuba conducts National Polio Vaccination Campaign

HAVANA, Cuba, April 28 (ACN) The 65th National Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccination Campaign began on Monday in Havana and will extend throughout the country, representing one of the achievements of Cuban public health, as it guarantees that all children will be free of this disease.

Dr. Daniuska Hernandez Griñan, head of the National Immunization and Vaccine-Preventable Disease Surveillance Program of the Ministry of Public Health, explained exclusively to Cuban News Agency that children over one month old and under three years of age will be vaccinated with two doses (two drops) in two phases.

Children nine years of age will also receive a booster dose (one drop) in the second phase. She specified that the first phase will take place from today until May 2, and from May 4 to 9, a catch-up period will be held for those children who were unable to be vaccinated for any reason.

While the second phase is scheduled from June 15 to 20, it will also include recovery days from June 22 to 27.

The specialist highlighted that a total of 343,296 infants will be immunized, which represents a significant effort since it is a vaccine that must be imported, and demonstrates the importance that Public Health, and especially the care of children, has for the country.

This process coincides with the 24th Vaccination Week in the Americas and the 15th World Immunization Week, which are being held under the slogan: Your decision makes a difference. Polio is a serious and potentially debilitating disease; it was eliminated in Cuba in 1962, after a four-month campaign.
