The first secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban Party and president of the country, Miguel Diaz-Canel, urged today to ensure the protection of human lives and material resources in the face of the imminent passage of Hurricane Ian through the western region of Cuba.

Since August 1960, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and members of the U.S. Mafia had been preparing one of the first assassination plots against Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, among the more than 600 that would be attempted in the following 40 years, on the occasion of his trip to the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The Cuban Railway Company announces that as of noon today, scheduled departures on national trains will be suspended until further notification, due to the deterioration of weather conditions caused by the approach of Hurricane Ian.
According to the entity's statement, local train services in western provinces (from Pinar del Rio to Matanzas) are also cancelled.

The Institute of Meteorology announced in its 13th Tropical Cyclone Advisory that Ian kept strengthening and, early this morning, became the fourth hurricane of the present season, all of them formed in September.

The preliminary results of the Popular Referendum are not available yet due to the weather conditions in several regions of the country, according to the National Electoral Council (CEN).

The counting of votes cast in the popular referendum on the Family Code took place in this city in a transparent and legal way, as witnessed by local residents of each constituency who offered to act as observers.

A total of 5,806,078 Cubans (68.91% of the electoral roll) had cast their vote in the popular referendum on the new Family Code by 5:00 p.m., according to Alina Balseiro, president of the National Electoral Council (CEN), who added that most colleges closed at six in the afternoon, barring those in places where the process was extended for an additional hour because of the weather.

The Cuban Institute of Meteorology reports that during this Sunday morning tropical storm Ian has continued to advance towards the west northwest, gaining in organization, with the development of rainfall areas around its center of circulation and creating feeding bands.

María Esther Bacallao Martínez, secretary of the National Electoral Council (CEN), reported that as of 11:00 a.m. close to 3.3 milliom Cubans exercised their right to vote in the referendum on the Family Code, which represents 37.03 percent of the updated electoral roll.
She reminded that the results of the previous Sunday's voting, abroad, will be made known with the closing of the whole process.

Army General Raul Castro Ruz exercised his right to vote this morning, as part of the exercise of democratic participation that Cuba is experiencing this day, reports the Twitter account of the Presidency of the Republic.

"Today is the date with the future. September 25 has arrived," said Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, on the occasion of Sunday's referendum on the Family Code.

Cuban president Miguel Diaz-Canel held a meeting via videoconference with authorities of territories in the center and west of the country aimed at specifying the preparation to face the possible effects of the current tropical storm Ian, which should become a hurricane in the coming hours.

As it passes through the central Caribbean Sea, Tropical Storm Ian gained slightly in organization and intensity tonight, and now has maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour, with higher gusts, and a central pressure of 1,002 hectoPascal.

After an extensive process of popular and specialized consultation, updating by experts and debate in various spaces, this Sunday the Family Code will be submitted to the referendum that will determine its entry into force if it receives the majority vote of the people for yes.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 was registered on Saturday as perceptible by the network of stations of the Cuban National Seismological Service, 32 kilometers (km) southwest of Cabo Cruz, in the eastern province of Granma.
