Cuba finished fourth in the XVII NORCECA Men's Pan-American Cup, held in the Dominican Republic, after losing 1-3 the bronze medal match to Puerto Rico.

Poor performances in various finals pushed Cuba down on the medal table of the 2008 Olympic Games. From the 11th place achieved in Athens, the island fell to the 28th in Beijing, winning only three gold medals in this event in which 158 Cuban athletes competed in 18 sports.

Archer Hugo Franco will be the first Cuban in action at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he will make his debut on July 25, one day before the opening ceremony of the great multisport event.

After a long absence from Olympic Games, Cuba reappears in the IX edition held in Amsterdam from May 17 to August 12, 1928, with the sprinter José Barrientos, who arrives in the Dutch city with good references.

 Although the modern Olympic Games began in Athens in 1896, Cuba made its debut four years later in Paris, where fencer Ramon Fonst won the first gold medal for Latin America.

Cuba’s athletics has secured eight more spots for the 2024 Olympic Games, so the number of its track-and-field figures in the summer event has now reached 18, which makes it the island’s largest team.

Cuban freestyle wrestlers Yusneylis Guzman, 50 kilograms (kg), and Milaymis Marin (76 kg), will debut tomorrow at the Grand Prix of Wrestling of Spain 2024, to be held from today until next July 7 in Madrid.

José Antonio Miranda, director of high performance of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER), ratified that Cuba’s main purpose in the 2024 Olympic Games is to be among the top 20 countries in the medal table.

On the occasion of World Sports Journalists Day, His Excellency the French Ambassador to Cuba, Laurent Burin des Roziers, met with Cuban journalists who are attending a seminar as they prepare to cover the 2024 Olympic Games.
