Cuba beats Costa Rica in Pan American Volleyball Cup



 HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 20 (ACN) The Cuban women's team defeated Costa Rica 3-0 on Monday in the second day of Group B of the XXI North, Central America and Caribbean Pan American Cup (Norceca), to be held until the 25th in Leon and Irapuato, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato.

With this result, the Cubans get their first winin the tournament, with scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18, in an hour and five minutes of action on the court, in which they were better in attack, 37 points to 22, blocking (10-4) and service (6-0), while they gave six more points to their rivals due to their own errors (28-22).

According to www.norceca.net, Costa Rica's Melina Ester Abarca, top scorer of the match with 11 points, nine in attack and two in blocking, stood out individually in Irapuato.

Also outstanding were Cuba's Lianet García Anglada (10/9-1-0) and Yilian Regla de la Peña (10/9-1-0), who completed the trio of players with double digits.

Today also won, but in the Group A, in Leon, the Colombian team, beat Suriname 3-0 (25-4, 25-12 and 25-9).

This Monday, Argentina and Chile will also play against the United States and Puerto Rico, a team that defeated Cuba 3-2 at the beginning of the tournament, with scores of 25-22, 15-25, 22-25, 28-26 and 15-8.

The pending matches of today's Group A are Peru-Canada and Mexico-Dominican Republic, in that order.

Today, the Cubans will face the Americans and then the Argentineans (Wednesday) and the Chileans (Thursday), in the closing of the preliminary phase.
