HAVANA, Cuba, May 29 (ACN) Doctor of Science María Guadalupe Guzmán Tirado, director of the Research, Diagnosis and Reference Center of the Pedro Kouri Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK), was awarded the L'Oréal-UNESCO International Prize for Women in Science for her studies about dengue fever, a disease that mainly hits intertropical areas and infects 50 to 100 million people worldwide every year.

The health system in the province of Holguín is extending the delivery of booster doses of Cuban COVID-19 vaccines, already administered to 92% of the local target population.

Sponsored by the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) and the Cuban Society of Microbiology and Parasitology, the 10th International Course on Leptospirosis Havana 2022, focused on discussions about the most relevant aspects of zoonoses with a view to developing early-warning systems and preventive measures at regional level, started its sessions in this city with the participation of renowned professors from Argentina, France and the United States, among others.

Educative meetings and workshops at with adolescents and their relatives at schools and communities about the risks of early-age pregnancy are some of the actions being taken under the Program for Mother-Child Attention in this eastern Cuban province in an effort to lower the incidence rate of adolescent pregnancy.

Daniel Ernesto Leyva Almaguer is one of the children with disabilities in the province of Holguin(eastern region) whose quality of life has been affected as a result of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba.

Jose Angel Portal Miranda, Cuban minister of public health, stressed today in the general debate of the 75th World Health Assembly, that the key to the control of COVID-19 in Cuba is based on a system of social justice that puts the human being at the center of its policies.
