Cuba Takes Action to Prevent Adolescent Pregnancy

Santiago de Cuba, May 24 (ACN) Educative meetings and workshops at with adolescents and their relatives at schools and communities about the risks of early-age pregnancy are some of the actions being taken under the Program for Mother-Child Attention in this eastern Cuban province in an effort to lower the incidence rate of adolescent pregnancy.

Mother-Child Attention Program official in Santiago, Ana Guisandes, praised the work of doctors and nurses in community assistance actions to control adolescent pregnancy, whose incidence increased during the COVID-19 confinement period here.

Some issues addressed during the workshops and meetings included the consequences that induced abortion or menstrual regulation may have for the health of adolescents involved in these practices.

Guisandes recalled the ongoing joint work by the Cuban Women Federation and education centers in Santiago de Cuba to educate young children from elementary to professional education, because of the large number of child and adolescent pregnancies.

Although the country’s demographic policy encourages births, the Mother-Child Attention Program in Santiago promotes the prevention of pregnancy in young ladies from 12 to 17 years of age because they do not have the appropriate physical and psychological conditions to have and raise healthy children.
