The Jamaican government asked Cuba for around 100 nurses to help local intensive care units (ICUs) in treating the most serious cases of COVID-19, the Jamaica Observer journal reported.

Cuba now has a Science, Technology and Innovation Observatory (OCTI), reported this Wednesday the Master in Science Ceferino Julio Santaren Suarez, director general of the Institute of Scientific and Technological Information, leading the design of the project led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA by its Spanish acronym).

Cuba is equipped with the necessary laboratory network and resources for the diagnosis of the coronavirus COVID-19, a disease which has killed more than 3,823 people and infected 106,112 worldwide.

The use of HeberFeron, a drug created and produced by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB by its Spanish acronym), in Havana, has spread throughout the country by opening more centers in different municipalities.

Cuba is the only country in the world that since 1961 has been holding annual polio vaccination campaigns, which have allowed under 72-year-old population to be protected against the disease, experts from the ministry of public health (MINSAP by its Spanish acronym) said in Havana.

Cuban public health minister Jose Angel Portal highlighted his country's achievements in the application of cochlear implants, as part of the celebration of World Cochlear Implant Day.

Cuba remains free of suspected or confirmed coronavirus cases, which already affect 30 countries, Cuban ministry of public health ( MINSAP by its Spanish acronym) officials told the press today.

Cuba closed 2019 with a 5.0 infant mortality rate per 1,000 live births, placing the Caribbean island among the 35 best in the world in this regard, president Miguel Diaz-Canel wrote today on Twitter.
