Cuban experts debate the role of science in health



HAVANA, Cuba, November 7 (ACN) Science as a key factor in the development of the Cuban health system was the topic of discussion today during the final day of the Ibero-American Congress for the Exchange and Updating of Science and Technology Management (Ibergecyt 2025) and the Havana Innovation Fair.

During her presentation, Ileana Morales Suarez, National Director of Science and Technological Innovation at the Ministry of Public Health, noted that the country's health sector has historically maintained constant evolution supported by scientific innovation as a means of confronting complex situations, such as COVID-19.

She added that a clear governance of science has been established in public health, reflected in the creation of various research institutions, the universalization of education, and the development of diverse medical strategies for Cuban families, among other things.

She emphasized that the Cuban health model has been characterized by vaccination programs that have eradicated diseases, the development of recognized medications, and international cooperation, demonstrating the innovative management of this sector.

In Cuba, studies in the field are based on the priorities of national science policy and the needs of society, which demonstrates the relevance of research processes, he emphasized.

Morales Suarez underscored the importance and efficiency of professional training in health, which has resulted in the country having 6,325 researchers, 28,630 professors, 30,932 master's degree holders, and more than 1,000 PhDs.
