Cuba received on Thursday a Chinese government donation of high-tech equipment to monitor air quality in towns of the capital, which will contribute to protect the environment and the health of the population.

Lyes Ferroukhi, Regional Technical Advisor for Biodiversity and Ecosystems of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), praised Cuba's actions in preserving the environment.

The Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, is paying a visit to Cuba and held talks with Cuban Interior Minister Division General Carlos Fernandez Gondin.

Army General Raul Castro, President of the councils of State and Ministers, welcomed Army General Do Ba Ty, Deputy Defense Minister, Chief of Staff of Vietnam People's Army, as well as the delegation accompanying him, who are on an official visit to Cuba at the invitation of the Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR).

Italy´s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi arrived Tuesday evening in Havana following an invitation made by President Raul Castro during his visit to Rome in May.

Cuban foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez said in New York that the negative vote by the US against the Cuban resolution demanding the lifting of the economic blockade on the island does not fit in Washington´s discourse about working to lift the siege and described the event as disappointing.

On December 17 last year, the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, recognized that the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed against Cuba had failed, is obsolete, has not met the originally envisaged goals and causes damages to the Cuban people and isolation to the US Government.

The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) began this morning in New York the discussion of the draft resolution that urges the United States to lift the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba.
