Costa Rican President: Joint Work is Key to Boost Caribbean Development

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 4 (acn) Joint work and integration will be essential to carry on with the objectives of development proposed for the coming years by the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) in order to achieve prosperity and sustainability in the countries of the area.
This need was highlighted today by Luis Guillermo Solis, president of Costa Rica, while addressing participants in the highest level segment of the Seventh Summit of the ACS, held at the iconic Palacio de la Revolucion with the assistance of the Heads of State and Government and delegations of the territories grouped in that forum.
He underlined that the issues selected to work on in the following calendar are key, and stressed the importance that the organization’s agenda has been harmonized with the global objectives of sustainable development, aimed at ending poverty, fighting inequality and injustice, and facing climate change.
Solis emphasized, among ACS plans, the achievement of air and maritime connectivity, which has conspired against unity in the region, employment generation; increase the degree of technological innovation and exchange of best practices and higher levels of education.
The President acknowledged the relevance of promoting multi-destination as a tourist product, a key aspect in Caribbean economies.
He also referred to the urgency of combating trafficking networks that violate humanitarian security in the region, which is becoming, in his opinion, a traffic area, hence he urged to gain in awareness and solidarity.
He said, moreover, that economic development and security can only be meaningful if the importance of climate change is recognized, so it will be necessary to implement the agreements reached at the international conference in Paris, with which there are common and differentiated responsibilities.
On how to address such challenges, Solis suggested the use of preventive practices, an area in which Cuba has an extraordinary capacity, he commented.
