HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 4 (acn) Let’s turn the Caribbean into a referent in risk prevention and progress of the goals of sustainable development, said today Danilo Medina, president of the Dominican Republic, during the Seventh Summit of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).
At Havana’s Palacio de la Revolucion, Medina, also president pro tempore of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), referred to the current challenges facing Latin America, the Caribbean and worldwide.
For the Caribbean countries addressing climate change it is particularly important, it is a challenge to survival, and with a sense of responsibility the consumerist countries that have influenced climate change should provide assistance to the most vulnerable, the head of state reflected on.
We are pleased to see how various nations from which we asked leadership on a par to their responsibility demonstrate the political will to reverse the dangerous trend, and this encourages the choice of the agenda for sustainable development by 2030, with its 17 goals.
Regional focus and action are essential to provide adequate responses to the particularities of each nation, he pointed out, noting that strengthening of the ACS and regional unit should materialize not in political statements but with concrete contribution.
The Dominican Republic reiterates its support for the initiatives of the ACS to promote trade with the elimination of obstacles, and to make transport efficient we understand that initiatives should be complemented by a scheme that takes into account the asymmetries of nations, he stated.
