Cuban authorities say that all conditions will be ready over the next 48 hours to recover the mortal remains of 14 firefighters reported as missing after the explosion of a fuel tank under fire at the Matanzas city supertanker base.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez thanked Spain’s ambassador to Cuba Angel Martin Peccis for the shipment of medication and other medical supplies to the island to assist victims of the massive fire that affected the supertankers oil base in Matanzas city.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla thanked today the international solidarity in the midst of adversity, in contrast to the hostile U.S. policy, spearheaded by the economic, commercial and financial blockade designed to suffocate the Island.

With over a hundred donations and 500 bank deposits, the assistance offered in the aftermath of the fire in the city of Matanzas is more than what Cuba received during the pandemic, said Aliuska López Reyes, head of the provincial department of International Cooperation, Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment.

Although he managed to escape unscathed and die peacefully in 1939 in Miami Beach—where else?— Gerardo Machado, the Cuban tyrant, saw his dreams of ruling in perpetuity, ending communism and siding up with imperialism shattered on August 12, 1933, when he was toppled by a popular revolution led mainly by the labor unions and the leftist forces that he hated so much.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel indicated the next steps in the fight to put out the fire at the Matanzas Supertanker Base—almost under control after days-long operations—in statements to the press during his visit to the command post near the fire, where he warned everyone to stay focused and beware of overconfidence about a kind of fire known to erupt again despite any containment measure.

“We are still working and making progress in putting out the fire, and there’s still danger but things have changed for the better,” Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Ávalos Jorge, second in command of the National Firefighting Division of the Cuban Fire Department, told the press about the Friday accident at the supertanker base in the province of Matanzas as efforts continue to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.

China’s Red Cross Society donated one million Yuan (some 150 thousand dollars) to Cuba to back rescue and recovery actions amidst the current massive fire that broke out at a supertanker oil depot on the bay area of the western city of Matanzas.
