Cuban civil asked UN to urge US president to stop threatening Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, January 27 (ACN) Cuban civil society organizations have asked UN Secretary-General AntónioGuterres to urge US President Donald Trump to refrain from resorting to the threat or use of force against Cuba's territorial integrity and independence, reported the Cuban Foreign Ministry's website, Cubaminrex.

The request was conveyed in a letter signed by Norma GoicocheaEstenoz, president of the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU), which denounces the recent statements by the US administration as violations of international law and the Security Council's primary responsibility to maintain international peace and security.

The document recalled that Cuba is a founding member of the UN and emphasized that the threats to "devastate Cuba" constitute an act of contempt for the lives and security of millions of people, aggravated by the impact of the economic, commercial, financial, and technological blockade imposed by Washington for more than six decades.

The letter also expressed civil society's support for the national authorities' commitment to the well-being of the population, reflected in public policies whose design and implementation are supported by the ACNU.

The text emphasized that Cuba is a peaceful nation that respects international law and demanded reciprocity from all signatory states of the UN Charter to save future generations from the scourge of war.

The letter was published on the ACNU's official accounts and coincides with a context of mass protests in the United States against the Trump administration, which have been repressed, highlighting the contradiction between its rhetoric and its actions regarding democracy and human rights.

CUBAN ASSOCIATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS

Havana, January 23, 2026

Your Excellency: I am writing to you on behalf of Cuban civil society organizations and other entities, individuals, community leaders, and various members and/or collaborators of the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU).

The ACNU is a Cuban civil society organization founded in 1947 that has held special consultative status with the European Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 1999 and is a member of the United Nations Council (CONGO) and the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA).

Since its creation, it has actively worked to promote and defend the purposes and principles enshrined in the UN Charter and multilateralism.

It has also served as a bridge between the United Nations and Cuban civil society. I am writing to you with urgency, indignation, and deep concern regarding the growing and blatant threats from US President Donald Trump to peace in the region and the world, reflecting his utter contempt and disrespect for multilateralism and the existing international order.

The actions of the US administration seriously violate International Law and the Charter of the United Nations, while also infringing upon the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security that this legal instrument confers upon the UN Security Council.

We emphatically reject the US administration's disregard for its statutory obligations as a permanent member of this principal organ of the United Nations, as well as its selective use of the veto to mask its actions as a pariah state within the international community.

The illegal, criminal, and unjustified aggression against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on January 3rd; the massacre of more than 100 people (32 of them Cubans), and the kidnapping of the country's constitutional president, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, reflect the actions of the current US administration outside the international order.

We strongly condemn the state terrorism practiced by the United States against Venezuela, which constitutes an act of imperial arrogance and hubris, barbarity, and contempt for humanity.

Furthermore, in another display of disrespect for the principles of sovereign equality of states, the self-determination of peoples, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, the US president has rudely and specifically threatened to "wipe out Cuba," a founding member of the United Nations, a defender of multilateralism, the UN Charter, and international law.

Mr. Trump and his administration are unconcerned about the implications of military action against the island.

It wounds the conscience of good people, their contempt for the life and safety of millions of children, young people, women, the elderly and in general of a hardworking, supportive and joyful people who suffer great deprivations due to the impact of the economic, commercial, financial and technological blockade that the United States has applied to our country for more than six decades, violating all the human rights of the Cuban population, first and foremost, their right to life.

 The actions of the U.S. government violate the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, adopted in 2014, which has our full support and that of all Latin Americans and Caribbeans who defend, promote, and love peace.

Your Excellency,

On behalf of the individuals, organizations, networks, movements, and other actors associated with and/or collaborating with the UN, we ask that, pursuant to Article 2.4 of the Charter, you unequivocally and without delay urge President Donald Trump and his administration to refrain from resorting to the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of the Cuban State.

Through you, we extend this request to all structures of the Organization, as well as to the agencies, funds, and programs of the System.

We all know that the actions and commitment of the entities of the United Nations System in favor of the Cuban people, the sustainable development of the country, and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda would be seriously affected by a U.S. military aggression.

The Cuban civil society I represent supports the commitment of the national authorities and their actions in favor of the well-being of the entire population, which is reflected in the public policies adopted, in whose design, implementation, and oversight we play a fundamental role. I reaffirm,

Your Excellency, our commitment to continue striving for international peace and security, to further the development of international cooperation, and to promote sustainable development, including the realization of the goals and objectives of the 2030 Agenda.

We will also maintain our position in the defense and promotion of all human rights for all. I can assure you that this is the overwhelming sentiment of the Cuban people.

Cuba is a peaceful, resilient, and resistant nation that respects international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

We therefore demand reciprocal treatment from all States signatory to the Charter of the United Nations.

We hope to count on your resolute support to ensure that, as the preamble to the Charter states, future generations—in this case, our population—are spared the scourge of war.

In conveying our hope in your resolute efforts to bring peace to Cuba, as well as in the abstention from the use of force by the US administration against the territorial integrity and independence of our nation, I take this opportunity to reiterate to you, Mr. Secretary-General, the assurances of our highest consideration and respect.
