HAVANA, Cuba, January 28 (ACN) Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Cuba's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), addressed the Security Council to denounce the serious deterioration of peace and security in the Middle East as a result of policies of force, occupation, and aggression, in open violation of International Law and the UN Charter.
During the quarterly open debate on the situation in the region, including the Palestinian question, Mr. Soberón alerted to the profound instability marked by prolonged conflicts and unilateral actions against the sovereignty of states and condemned in particular the United States' historical support for Israel, which has kept in place for decades a criminal and annexationist policy despite many opposing Security Council resolutions.
He decried Israel's systematic attacks against the civilian population and essential infrastructure in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, as well as the deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid and the use of hunger as a weapon of war, describing such acts as apartheid, crimes against humanity, and genocide for which Israel must be held accountable before the international community.
The Cuban diplomat also condemned the repeated violations of the ceasefire and the military incursions in the West Bank and the unilateral imposition of the so-called "yellow line" as the new border between Gaza and Israel, and demanded the immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Similarly, he denounced the attack launched by Israel on January 20 on UNRWA facilities and personnel in East Jerusalem, stressing that targeting humanitarian workers and UN agencies is an unacceptable act that exacerbates the suffering of the Palestinian people.
Cuba reaffirmed the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to an independent and sovereign state within the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and the right of refugees to return, while urging the immediate admission of Palestine as a full Member State of the United Nations.
Likewise, Mr. Soberóncondemned Israel's territorial occupation of Southern Lebanon and the Syrian Golan Heights and its actions against the sovereignty of Somalia, and warned of the danger of aggression against Iran, reiterating that a just and lasting peace in the Middle East will not be possible without a comprehensive and definitive solution to the Palestinian question and urging the Security Council to act decisively to end impunity
