HAVANA, Cuba, January 9 (ACN) Political sectors, labor unions, and social movements in the Dominican Republic remain mobilized in support of the people and government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, following the US military attack on January 3, the Cuban embassy to the Caribbean nation stated through Cubaminrex.
Santo Domingo's Independence Park hosted a demonstration organized by the National Popular Coordinating Committee, along with leftist parties and groups, which reiterated its rejection of the aggression and demanded the release of constitutional president Nicolás Maduro Moros and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Participants in the demonstration demanded respect for the Charter of the United Nations and the sovereignty of states, as well as the reinstatement of the Venezuelan leaders and an end to US claims on the region's strategic resources.
The Confederation of Class-Based Workers' Unions issued a public statement condemning the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela as a grave violation of sovereignty and rejecting the bombing of the country and the kidnapping of its highest constitutional authorities.
The statement deemed these events acts of state terrorism that transgress fundamental principles of international law and the self-determination of peoples, and called on the United Nations and other multilateral organizations to condemn the aggression and take action to restore peace.
Expressions of solidarity in the Dominican Republic are part of a regional context of rejection of the U.S. military presence in the Caribbean and denunciations of interference in Venezuela's internal affairs.
The statements reflected a joint call for unity among the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean to defend peace, self-determination, and international justice in the face of the reactivation of the Monroe Doctrine.
