Cuba condemns U.S. aggression against Venezuela at UN Security Council session

On Monday, Cuba condemned in the strongest terms the U.S. military aggression against Venezuela and categorically reiterated its absolute support and solidarity with the people and government of that country.

During an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, held at Venezuela’s request, Cuba’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón, said that the attack occurred “with absolute disregard for the Charter of the United Nations and International Law.”

In the early hours of January 3, “U.S. military forces attacked Venezuela with total brutality and treachery and, in an unacceptable and barbaric act, kidnapped its legitimate president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores,” Soberón stated.

Cuba joins the call, he emphasized, for the United States government to “release constitutional President Nicolás Maduro Moros and his wife, Cilia Flores.”

He recalled that, since September of last year, Cuba has denounced the hegemonic and criminal plans of the United States and its aggressive actions against Venezuela and the region.

“We have clearly outlined the grave and unpredictable consequences of the irresponsible conduct of the United States government for the political, social, and economic stability of Latin America and the Caribbean, and more generally for international peace and stability,” he stressed.

He reiterated the warnings issued on December 23 in this same body regarding “the sequence and escalation of actions carried out by the United States in record time, with the aim of forcibly overthrowing the legitimate and constitutional government of Venezuela and ending the Civic-Military Union.”

Its ultimate goal is not the false narrative of combating drug trafficking, but rather control over Venezuela’s land and natural resources, as President (Donald) Trump and his Secretary of State openly and brazenly declared, he pointed out.

“This is an imperialist and fascist aggression with the aim of domination, which seeks to revive the hegemonic ambitions of the United States over Our America, rooted in the antiquated Monroe Doctrine,” he asserted.

“If the U.S. government, lacking any moral authority, truly cared about the peace, freedom, and justice of Venezuelans, it would not have bombed this territory with absolute contempt for the lives, sovereignty and territorial integrity of this nation.”

Soberón noted that “in the criminal attack perpetrated by the United States, 32 Cubans lost their lives in combat, while carrying out missions on behalf of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, at the request of their counterparts in that country.”

Our compatriots honorably fulfilled their duty and fell, after fierce resistance, in direct combat against the attackers or as a result of the bombing of the facilities, the Cuban representative emphasized.

“With their heroic actions, they embodied the solidarity of millions of compatriots,” he added.

The UN diplomat reaffirmed Cuba’s unwavering commitment to the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
