Colombia Advocates for the Preservation of Regional Peace

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 3 (ACN) Gustavo Petro, President of Colombia, today reaffirmed his country's position, aimed at preserving regional peace, in the face of the military actions perpetrated in the early hours of this morning by the United States against Venezuela.

On X, the president reaffirmed Bogotá's commitment to the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, particularly respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, the prohibition of the threat or use of force, and the peaceful settlement of international disputes.
The Colombian government rejects any unilateral military action that could aggravate the situation or put the civilian population at risk, he stated.

Furthermore, Petro issued an urgent call for de-escalation and exhorted all involved parties to refrain from actions that deepen confrontation and to privilege dialogue and diplomatic channels.

He indicated that his country's Foreign Ministry will promote, in relevant multilateral and regional forums, initiatives aimed at the objective verification of the facts and the preservation of regional peace and security.

In his message, the Colombian head of state also announced that, as a preventive measure, the National Government has arranged measures to protect the civilian population, preserve stability on the Colombian-Venezuelan border, and promptly address any potential humanitarian or migratory needs.

Delcy Rodríguez, Vice President of Venezuela, confirmed that the whereabouts of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are unknown, and that this Saturday's bombings in Caracas left several dead, both military and civilian, without specifying numbers.
