Russian expert praises Cuba's role in nuclear research with Russia

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 5 (ACN) Cuba is the only Latin American country that, since 1976, has signed a cooperation agreement with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), located in Dubna, Moscow Region, making it one of its member states, a Russian expert emphasized in this capital.

"It gives me great satisfaction to participate in the organization of the JINR-Cuba Physics School on Hadronic Structure and the Physics of Hadronic Matter, which is one of the activities to commemorate these 50 years of fruitful, highly specialized cooperation," Katherin Shtejer Díaz, its scientific secretary and current collaborator on one of the Moscow institution's projects, told the Cuban News Agency exclusively.

" Shtejer Díaz delivered the first lecture of the meeting, , where 11 renowned Russian scientists from the Moscow academy and five Cubans are also participating.

According to our interviewee, this is a new opportunity for students and young scientists from Cuba and Latin America to receive valuable knowledge from leaders in essential particle physics and accelerator projects.

These important topics, she added, form the basis of the JINR's cutting-edge research project on the internal structure and properties of hadronic matter under extreme conditions.

“I am very grateful to our professors for coming to Cuba to share their knowledge with our students about experiments aimed at better understanding hadronic matter, its structure, the evolution of the early universe, the formation of neutron stars, and the physics of heavy-ion collisions.”

She emphasized that more than 300 Cuban scientists, professionals, and students have had the opportunity to collaborate and receive training in the areas of physics, nuclear physics, and elementary particles during these five decades of fruitful teaching with our institution, founded in 1956 as an international intergovernmental organization dedicated to studying the fundamental properties of matter using nuclear techniques.

The program for the celebration of this anniversary included, for the first time, meetings of the Committee of Plenipotentiary Representatives of the Governments of the Member States and the Finance Committee, and the Latin American Seminar for the Development of Scientific and Technical Collaboration in the Nuclear Sphere between Latin America and the Caribbean.

The joint work plan for 2026 foresees continued strengthening of relations and summer schools to further the training of future generations in the field of nuclear sciences in Cuba with the JINR, which has established cooperation with 1,000 research centers and universities, organizes more than 40 international conferences and meetings annually, and publishes 1,500 scientific articles and reports each year.
