HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 18 (ACN) A delegation from the Ministry of Transport (Mitrans) represented Cuba at the XI General Assembly of the Intergovernmental Council of the Ibero-American Road Safety Program (Oisevi) and the 6th Ibero-American Congress on Road Safety and Mobility, recently concluded in El Salvador.
According to a report today by the sector's head, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, Cuba's representatives presented from November 10 to 13 the strategies being applied in the country to increase mobility safety and reduce traffic accidents and their consequences in society.
Within the framework of the events, the Cuban delegation, headed by Deputy Minister Luis Ladrón de Guevara, moderated the panel composed of Peru, Honduras, and Guatemala, dedicated to addressing road safety management.
The information, offered by the head of the delegation, warns that the increase in traffic accidents constitutes a major challenge for Latin America and the Caribbean.
In the region, this type of accident is the main cause of death in children aged five to 14 and the second in young adults; pedestrians represent 22 percent of deaths from traffic incidents, while cyclists represent 3%.
The average mortality rate from traffic accidents in Latin America was 14.1 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2021, according to data from the World Health Organization.
According to the report, the aforementioned figures are higher than those shown by Cuba.
The Deputy Minister specified that in the context of his visit, he also held meetings with his counterpart from El Salvador, the incoming and outgoing presidents of Oisevi, and executives of commercial companies dedicated to the supply of parts and spare parts for transportation.
Likewise, they met with Cuban diplomatic personnel accredited in El Salvador, as well as with Salvadoran doctors who graduated in Cuba, who sent a donation of medical supplies with them.
