HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 28 (ACN) Countries from different regions of the world today demanded at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) the end of the blockade imposed by the US on Cuba, during the discussion of a draft resolution demanding an end to this hostile policy.
Barbados, on behalf of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), expressed that the unilateral US economic, commercial, and financial blockade continues to be a clear violation of the United Nations Charter and international law.
CARICOM warned that the continued existence of this meddling measure has caused the island to lose millions of dollars that could have been invested in health, education, and the development of economically important sectors.
It also highlighted Cuba's role in combating COVID-19 and in training doctors, teachers, and engineers from the region and around the world.
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) considered the US blockade a serious obstacle to Cuba's socioeconomic progress, as it has restricted the management of the banking sector, but also hampers internet access, fuel supplies, and sports, cultural, and scientific relations with other countries.
Uganda, representing the NAM, emphasized that the tightening of the blockade against Cuba, approved by the Washington government more than six decades ago, is a setback in the process of normalizing bilateral relations between the two nations.
At the same time, it condemned the inclusion of the Caribbean territory on the list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.
The Group of 77 and China (G77 + China), represented by Iraq, stated before the UNGA that thanks to Cuba's efforts, many members of the group have boosted their scientific and technical potential and highlighted friendship and solidarity ties of between this organization and the Caribbean island.
The resolution "Necessity of ending the United States economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba" will be presented to the United Nations General Assembly today and tomorrow.
This resolution has received the support of the majority of the world's countries since 1992.
