HAVANA, Cuba, August 27 (ACN) In a post on X, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla decried the deployment of more U.S. military vessels to the Caribbean in addition to the air and naval forces sent to the area earlier, describing it as Washington’s attempt to restore its dominance over Latin America and a grave danger for regional peace.
Mr. Rodríguez called ridiculous the excuse for these military operations, which, according to the White House, are intended to deal with drug cartels held to pose a threat to U.S. national security but only respond to the agenda of corrupt politicians like Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
A U.S. Department of Defense official, quoted by CNN, said the deployment is meant as a deterrent, although he stressed that the presence of these troops gives the military command a range of options to use force if deemed necessary.
Last week, the Cuban official insisted that Latin America and the Caribbean must be respected as a Zone of Peace, as proclaimed by the region's heads of state in 2014.
