The world celebrates Environment Day today

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 5 (ACN) All countries celebrate today World Environment Day to reflect on the challenges facing the planet and promote specific actions to fix the damage caused by pollution and climate change.

The date, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, takes on critical relevance in the current circumstances, marked by a triple planetary crisis caused by a rising atmospheric temperature, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

According to data from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), more than 40% of the world's land surface is already degraded, to the detriment of almost half of the global population, as this degradation undermines agricultural production, compromises food security, increases poverty, and causes the displacement of entire communities.

The initiative seeks to mobilize efforts and resources to stop this trend with steps to tackle climate change, preserve biodiversity, and ensure the livelihoods of millions of people while environmental experts and organizations insist that action must be immediate and coordinated, ranging from government policies in favor of reforestation and ecosystem protection to individual decisions on the consumption and use of natural resources.

World Environment Day is not just a commemoration, but a reminder of our interdependence with nature and the collective responsibility to preserve the planet for future generations.
