Cuba celebrates beginning of Leo XIV's pontificate

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 4 (ACN) Cuba saluted the beginning of Pope Leo XIV's pontificate with a thanksgiving mass in the Havana Cathedral on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of uninterrupted relations between Cuba and the Holy See.

Cuban VP Salvador Valdés Mesa and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, together with other State and Government officials, participated in the rite, which the faithful attended by the hundreds along with representatives of other religions.

The Eucharist was presided over by Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations of the Holy See, who in his homily stressed the will of the Church to contribute to the communion of Christians and the fraternity of peoples and conveyed warm greetings from Pope Leo XIV, in whose heart, he said, Cuba enjoys a special place.

In his message, Monsignor Gallagher urged everyone, believers or otherwise, to walk the paths of justice, peace and reconciliation promulgated in the Catholic scriptures.

Since they were established on June 7, 1935, relations between Cuba and the Holy See have been based on constructive dialogue, mutual respect, and a willingness to overcome challenges and find a way to build bridges of understanding.

This year also marks other major milestones, such as the 10th anniversary of the visit that Army General Raúl Castro Ruz paid to the Vatican and of the apostolic trip of Pope Francis to Cuba.
