Executive Secretary of CTBTO begins official visit to Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 31 (ACN) Dr. Robert Floy, Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Organization for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBTO), began an official visit to Cuba.

His stay in Havana will last until next Wednesday, according to Cuban diplomatic sources who also referred to the fact that the top executive of the Vienna-based organization will carry out a broad work agenda.

They specified that it includes meetings with national authorities and with directors of the foreign affairs and science, technology and environment ministries (CITMA by its Spanish acronym), among others.

In addition, he plans to deliver a lecture at the Raul Roa Garcia Higher Institute of International Relations.

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty was approved by the UN General Assembly on September 10, 1996 and Cuba ratified it on February 4, 2021.

One of its essential objectives is to verify the total prohibition of nuclear tests and to complement it.

The latter, together with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of Tlatelolco), is part of the international system of non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament, of which Cuba is an active defender.

The Office of Environmental Regulation and Security (ORSA-CITMA) is the National Regulatory Authority in charge of the national implementation of the international commitments assumed by the country regarding nuclear disarmament and other weapons of mass destruction.
