Havana, March 10 (ACN) Suriname’s Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin was elected general secretary of the Organization of American States (OAS) replacing outgoing general secretary Luis Almagro.
Ramdin, 67, is the first Caribbean official to have been elected to the post. He will lead the organization till 2030 and will take office on May 25, when Almagro steps down after 10 years on that position.
The Surinamese official was backed by the Caribbean Community (Caricom), Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic among all 34 countries with the right to vote.
