UN Welcomes Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Announcement



Havana, Nov 27 (ACN) United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed a ceasefire announced by Israel and the Lebanese resistance forces, which suggests the withdrawal of the soc called Blue-Line forces.

A UN communique expressed hope that the accord can end violence, destruction to ease the suffering of Israeli and Lebanese people.

Guterres urged the two parties to fully honor and implement the compromises assumed and stressed the importance to take action I the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1701, which brought to an end the conflict between the two nations in 2006.

UN Special Coordinator for the Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert said that there is still a long way ahead to guarantee the prevalence of the accord. It takes the full and unbreakable compromise of both parties, she noted.

Israel and Hezbollah adopted on Monday the accord negotiated by the United States and France. The document stipulates that Israeli forces withdraw from Southern Lebanon and that the Lebanese army be deployed in the region, while Hezbollah will put an end to its armed presence along the Litany River border.
