HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 2 (ACN) On the occasion of the 79th anniversary of Vietnam's independence, Miguel Diaz-Canel, Cuban president, congratulated today the people, the Communist Party and the government of that Southeast Asian nation.
On X, the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba also assured that the historic friendship, cooperation and solidarity ties that unite the two countries will continue to be strengthened.
Diaz-Canel recalled in another message Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 - September 2, 1969), founder of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and important personality of the international communist and workers' movement.
Both countries established diplomatic relations in December 1960, the Caribbean island being the first state in the Western Hemisphere to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam.
The historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, visited that Asian country for the first time (out of three) between September 12 and 17, 1973, becoming the first and only world leader, head of state or government, present in the liberated territories of South Vietnam that were still under the threat of U.S. bombing.
Currently, Vietnam is the main Asian investor in Cuba and an important supplier of rice for the population's consumption.
