Cuba participates in hemispheric meeting on labor mobility

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 25 (ACN) A Cuban delegation is attending a hemispheric meeting held in the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss regular channels for labor migration.

On behalf of her delegation, Laura Pujol Torres, deputy director general of Consular Affairs and Cubans Residing Abroad of the Cuban Foreign Ministry, said that the goal is to guarantee regular, orderly and safe mobility flows in line with national priorities.

She stressed that despite the fact that the remittances sent by émigrés to their home countries contribute to their economies, the brain drain out of Cuba and Mexico creates serious problems to mitigate the factors of expulsion and straighten out the current unjust international economic order, which is the real cause of these phenomena.

In the case of Cuba, the official remarked, the solution to this problem involves a less asymmetrical relationship between migrant-receiving and migrant-sending countries, as the situation is fueled by the imposition of unilateral coercive measures, such as the 50-plus years old U.S. blockade and the inclusion of Cuba on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, that aggravate people’s economic situation.

“Dialogue, cooperation and political will must be the way forward,” Pujol Torres pointed out.
