Cuban triple jumper wins in Val de Reuil Meeting with record of the season

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 2 (ACN) Cuban Leyanis Perez jumped 14.65 meters to win the Val de Reuil Indoor Athletics Meeting in France, and in doing so, took the top spot in the winter season rankings.

Leyanis achieved 14.65 meters on her second attempt and moved to the top of the still-young season rankings, as until now Slovenian Ivana Spanovic held that position with 14.41 meters.

The 2025 outdoor and indoor world champion would have won in Val de Reuil with any of her four jumps.

She started with 14.45 meters, followed by the aforementioned 14.65 meters, and continued with 14.53 and 14.27 meters before passing on the last two attempts. “A year ago we opened the season with 14.52 meters, and now we've improved by 13 centimeters, so we're satisfied,” said coach Ricardo Ponce, who, naturally, is taking advantage of the indoor training to develop the foundation for what she'll face later outdoors.

A full run-up without shortening her stride, adapting to the speed and precision on the board, marked this first performance, in which she left Portugal's Saly Sarr (14.22 meters) and Germany's Caroline Joyeux (13.82 meters) behind her on the podium.

Perez will defend her indoor title between March 20 and 22 at the world championships scheduled for the Polish city of Kujawy Pomorze, and then in the summer she will have her sights set on gold at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo.
