MATANZAS, Cuba, January 12 (ACN) Winning a medal in the women's individual table tennis event at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo is a key goal for Daniela Fonseca, Cuba's top-ranked player, this year.
In recent statements to the press, the outstanding athlete, who has already participated in two Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024), affirmed that she will attend the regional multi-sport event to fulfill a personal ambition: to reach the podium in the individual competition and win gold in the mixed doubles event alongside her longtime partner, Jorge M. Campos.
Regarding her preparation for the Central American and Caribbean Games and other high-caliber competitions, the native of the municipality of Perico, in the western province of Matanzas, revealed that she plans to hold training camps in Portugal and China, in addition to participating in the World Championships in her discipline, to be held in London, United Kingdom, from April 28 to May 10.
I believe Cuban table tennis continues to rise in terms of its level. Right now, we have a strong women's team, completed by Rosalba Aguiar, Estela Crespo, and Karla Pérez, so we aspire to the top prizes in Santo Domingo, despite the competition from the teams of Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, she reflected.
Regarding 2025, she considered it a year with few events, where undoubtedly the most significant results came at the Caribbean Cup in Barbados, where she won one gold and two silver medals, despite competing with a cervical spine injury.
Champion at the first Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Valle, Colombia in 2021, Daniela Fonseca astonished Cuba and much of the world by becoming the 44th Cuban athlete to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics that same year, after winning the continental qualifier in Rosario, Argentina, at only 18 years old.
