Havana, December 9 (ACN) – With a fury that exceeded all predictions, Cuban boxer Giorvis Salfrán opened the day in Dubai with a resounding victory that further elevated his squad’s perfect record in the IBA World Championship.
The 51kg boxer unleashed a technical and emotional storm on Spain’s Salvador Molina, bronze medalist in Tashkent 2023, whom he dismantled by RSC in the first round after an explosive combination that forced the protective count and anticipated an inevitable end.
His final, precise, and ferocious attack prompted the referee to halt the punishment.
For Salfrán, runner-up at the 2023 Cologne World Cup, this victory marks his second triumph at a global event he entered as a debutant, but where he has fought with the determination of a veteran. His winning strike also brought the Cuban team’s tally to seven victories, and they will compete for the bronze medals tomorrow undefeated.
The Caribbean fighter will face Armenian Rudolf Garboyan, the European under-23 champion, in the quarterfinals, while three other titans of Caribbean boxing prepare for their own battles: two-time Olympic champions Arlen López (80 kg) and Julio César La Cruz (92 kg), along with 2023 world runner-up Fernando Arzola (+92 kg).
All eyes will be on La Cruz, who is pursuing his sixth world title and will face the 90 kg champion in the elite Liverpool tournament organized by World Boxing.
