HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 16 (ACN) Cuban women's volleyball team lost 0-3 to the Dominican Republic's second team on Monday in the first round of the North, Central America and the Caribbean (NORCECA) Final Six tournament, which concludes this Sunday in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
According to www.norceca.net, the players of the new coach of the Caribbean nation, Brazilian Lizomar De Moura, were unable to defeat the Dominicans, despite scoring 10 fewer points than their opponents due to their own errors (16-26).
The Dominican Republic won by scores of 25-16, 25-23, and 25-21, after one hour and 13 minutes of play.
The official team statistics for the match show better results for the Dominicans in all aspects of the game, with positive balances in attack (38 points to 26), blocking (12-5), and serving (9-3).
Individually, the Dominican Republic's top scorers were Alondra Denis Tapia, the match's top scorer with 19 points, 14 on attack, two on blocking, and three on serving, and Madeline Jazmin Guilean (15-10-2-3), the only two players with double-digit points. Cuba's best performer was Dezirett de la Caridad Madan (9-8-1-0).
Cubans' next opponents will be the Americans today, Tuesday, the Mexicans on Wednesday, the Puerto Ricans on Thursday, and the Canadians on Friday, in the round-robin qualifiers.
According to the organizers, the semifinal will be held on Saturday with matches between second place and third place and first place and fourth place, while on Sunday, the matches for fifth place, the bronze medal, and the gold medal will be contested, in that order.
The tournament awards points toward qualification for the 2026 NORCECA Continental Championship, the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, in addition to world ranking points for teams not competing in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL).
