Cuban Almeida wins Moratalaz Open chess tournament in Madrid

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 16 (ACN) Cuban Omar Almeida triumphed undefeated in the Moratalaz Open tournament in Madrid, and will return to action this Wednesday in a closed competition called Legends and Prodigies.

Almeida, a member of the most recent Olympic teams, finished in Moratalaz with 7.5 points out of a possible nine, leading by half a line over Spaniard Daniel Quispe and Bolivian Daniel Pinto, who placed second and third, in that order, after a tiebreaker system was applied.

Now in the tournament, which will also be held in the Spanish capital, the stakes will be higher, and the main incentive will be to show off in a "generational struggle" scenario.

The event was scheduled on a round-robin basis, and the players selected are on two opposing sides in terms of age and experience on the boards.

Six masters with many hours dedicated to the Science Game, such as Omar himself and the well-known Peruvian Julio Granda, will face four young players considered among the most talented on the current scene, such as Argentine Faustino Oro.

At just 11 years old and already holding the title of International Master, Oro is nicknamed the Messi of Chess and boasts boundless creativity when it comes to achieving good games. Rounding out the freshest players are 15-year-old Lu Miaoyi, ranked second among juniors, Spaniard Diego Macias, and fellow Argentine Ilan Schnaider.

Among the experienced players, the group is rounded out by Spaniards Jose Fernando Cuenca, Alan Pichot, and David Lariño, and Venezuelan Pedro Martinez.
