HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 15 (ACN) Cuban wrestler Yaynelis Sanz Verdecia (55 kilograms) maintains her medal hopes at the 2025 World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, after being taken to the repechage by Russian Ekaterina Verbina, her quarterfinal loser (4-6), advanced to the weight class final.
Sanz Verdecía will have a decisive bout this Tuesday, according to the International Wrestling Federation website, against Austrian representative Oleksandra Kogut.
A victory would qualify the two-time junior Pan American champion from Cali Valle 2021 and Asuncion 2025 for the fight for one of the bronze medals in the division.
Earlier, champion at the 2025 Monterrey Senior Pan American Championships, eliminated German Amory Andrich in the round of 16 by a score of six to zero.
Meanwhile, the other Cuban wrestlers already know their opponents for their debuts.
Olympic medalist Milaimis Marin (76 kg) will begin against Belarusian Anastasiya Zimiankova, the 2025 European runner-up. In the 53 kg category, Laura Herin will face an elite opponent from the start: Ecuadorian Lucia Yepez, Olympic runner-up at Paris 2024.
