HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 15 (ACN) Cuban wrestler Arturo Silot Torres (97 kg) concluded his participation in the 2025 Zagreb World Wrestling Championships after falling 1-1 to sixth-ranked Polish wrestler Zbigniew Baranowski in a tight round of 16 bout.
In his debut, the 24-year-old wrestler had demonstrated his quality by defeating 23rd-ranked Turkish Resul Gune 6-4 in the qualifying bout, but he could not overcome the experienced Baranowski, ranked seventh in the world, who later lost in the quarterfinals, preventing Silot, ranked 12th in the world, from reaching the playoffs.
Silot, the sole representative of Cuban men's wrestling at the event, arrived in Zagreb after winning a silver medal at the Pan American Championships last May in Mexico and after training in China.
With this result, the Cuban, ninth at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, was unable to repeat or improve on his performance from the world championships. Kyle Snyder, 29, who was the youngest U.S. Olympic champion in history at Rio 2016, will compete in the division final against reigning champion Akhmed Magomed Otazhdinov of Bahrain.
Cuban delegation to the World Championships, made up of seven athletes, also includes two-time junior Pan American champion Yainelis Sanz, who defeated German Amory O. Andrich in her first match by six-nil scores, but fell in the quarterfinals to Russian Catalina Verbina (6-4).
Currently, the 23-year-old girl hopes to be pulled into the playoff round if the Slavic athlete advances to the final.
