HAVANA, Cuba, August 24 (ACN) Cuba concluded its performance at the II Junior Pan American Games with positive results and fulfilled its main goals, according to a statement issued by the island’s delegation to the event remarking that Cuba finished in seventh place with 47 medals (19-13-15) won in nine sports.
Athletics deserved particular praise on account of its eight medals, as did the canoeist Yisnoly López, who won three gold medals and one bronze medal, and the wrestler Yaynelis Sanz (57 kg), who retained her title from four years ago.
The message pointed out that Cuban athletes set four new records for the Games and a national record in swimming, and explained that the two-place drop in the final ranking by country (Cuba was fifth in the 2021 edition) was due to various factors, including sports that were not convened this time, the absence of prominent figures who are currently ill or disabled, and the improved level of the competition this year.
Regardless, Cuba secured 17 spots for the 2027 Pan American Games, to be held in Lima, Peru.
The athletes expressed their gratitude for the messages of support, especially those posted on X by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and thanked the Cuban embassy and the solidarity movement in Paraguay, as well as the local population "who made us feel at home", Panam Sports, and the Games organizing committee.
The statement reaffirmed the pride of representing Cuba and confirmed that the island’s sports movement will now focus on the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo 2026.
