HAVANA, Cuba, August 4 (ACN) Young catcher Yuceidel Torres Diaz, a native from the municipality of Güines, at the western province of Mayabeque, stood out for his performance with Team Cuba at the U12 World Baseball Championship held in Chinese Taipei.
According to the provincial newspaper, Torres Diaz, who started all eight games, recorded an outstanding offensive average of .313, thanks to five hits in 16 at-bats, including a double and a home run.
He also drove in six runs, scored twice, drew six walks, made a sacrifice fly, and achieved an offensive output of .543, an OBP of .455, and OPS of 1.018.
Defensively, the young catcher committed no errors in nine assists, achieving a perfect average of 1.000.
The Mayabeque newspaper notes that Yuceidel was the only member of the team to repeat his participation after attending the 2024 Pan American qualifier in Panama, where Cuba won a bronze medal and a ticket to the World Cup.
Cuban team finished seventh in the tournament after a difficult start with three consecutive losses to Chinese Taipei, Japan, and Mexico, but recovered with victories against Germany, Australia, Panama, the Czech Republic, and South Africa, closing with a record of five wins and three losses.
