HAVANA, Cuba, August 1 (ACN) Cuban men's national team will face Turkey today in the fight for the 17th to 20th spots at the U19 World Championships, held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Cubans will face the Turks in search of a victory that will guarantee them an improved ranking in the tournament, after defeating Algeria 3-0 on Wednesday, in the beginning of the fight for the 17th-24th spots.
In the match against the Algerians, the official team statistics show that Cuba dominated the attack with 50 points to 26, and the serve (3-0), while being outnumbered in blocking (7-6) and errors (16-21).
Cuban Alessandro Gonzalez stood out individually, leading the match with 17 points, all in attack, followed by his teammates Andy Lazaro Marrero (12/11-1-0) and Yosoani Medina (12/10-1-1), and Algerian Islen Ghoanri (10/8-2-0), all four players with double digits.
Puerto Rico-Colombia will be the other match for the 17th-20th spots, while the 21st-24th matches will be Tunisia-Argentina and Egypt-Canada, and the 9th-16th matches will be Belgium-Japan, Brazil-Uzbekistan, China-Pakistan, and Argentina-United States.
Iran-Finland, France-Italy, South Korea-Poland, and Spain-Bulgaria will compete in the quarterfinals.
