Cuban beach volleyball duo Diaz - Alayo win silver at St. Petersburg



HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 21 (ACN) Cuban duo of Noslen Diaz and Jorge Luis Alayo won silver medal in St. Petersburg, one of the stages of the Russian Beach Volleyball League, losing in the final to the Yamal-1 Torch team, comprised of Stoyanosk and Leshukov.

They, until that game, undefeated, fell by scores of 14-21 and 18-21, a result that prevented them from repeating the title they won in the previous round in Moscow.

Cubans advanced to the final after easily defeating the Obinsk-Veretyuk duo in the Saturday afternoon semifinals, with scores of 21-12 and 21-17. They then defeated Dinamo, Kraslinikov-Reison, 2-1 in the morning quarterfinals, with scores of 21-18, 17-21, and 18-16.

The Caribbean duo have their next match at the World Championships in Adelaide, Australia, from November 14-23, where they must arrive with a strong ranking in the world rankings (WR) and enough experience.

Cuban duo was invited to participate in six rounds of the Russian league, seeking to continue earning points for WR.It's true that Cubans need to continue competing in tournaments that award points, and for now they're participating in the Russian tournament.

Their best performance in that period was first place in the Elite 16 in Quintana Roo, where they earned 1,200 points.
They will then return to the world circuit at the Elite 16 in Hamburg, Germany, scheduled for August 27-31.
