HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 30 (ACN) Cuban women's softball team confirmed its status as a serious contender for the continental title after completing the group stage of the 11th Pan American Championship, held in MonterIa, Colombia.
In their presentation on Sunday, Professor Jorge Lamas's team defeated Mexico—also undefeated until then—1-0 and secured first place in Group B, with four wins and no losses.
They had previously defeated the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, and Brazil.
Veteran Yilian Tornes once again was huge at pitching; delivering a dominant start that earned them their third win of the tournament.
Her powerful fastball and solid control throughout the seven innings silenced the Mexicans, raising her strikeout total to 37 in 21 innings pitched.
The decisive hit came in the fourth inning: a superb home run by shortstop Leannelys Zayas, who mercilessly punished a pitch from Mexican Citaly Gutierrez, thus opening the scoring in a highly tense duel.
With this result, Cuba advances to the Super Round buoyed by an impeccable performance, and with its sights set on one of the five available tickets to the World Cup, as well as one of the six spots to the Lima 2027 Pan American Games.
