HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 19 (ACN) Germán Mesa, the legendary shortstop for Industriales, was named today as the manager of Team Cuba for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, scheduled for March 5-17 in the U.S., Japan, and Puerto Rico.
The announcement was made at Havana’s Latinoamericano Stadium, where Humberto Guevara, Technical Chief of the Cuban Baseball Federation (FCBS), confirmed that Mesa will also remain in charge through 2028 for major international tournaments.
Mesa, a former bench coach in the last World Baseball Classic (where Cuba finished fourth) and the Premier 12, is renowned as one of Cuba’s greatest defensive shortstops, nicknamed "The Magician" for his spectacular plays.
After retiring, Mesa managed Industriales to a championship in 2010 and later coached in Nicaragua, Mexico, and Panama. His new challenge includes recruiting Cuban players abroad, including MLB stars, to strengthen the national team.
“I always play to win, no matter the opponent,” Mesa told the press.
