HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 16 (ACN) Cuban judoka Maylin del Toro will make her debut today in the fourth day of the individual tournament of the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, a competition that brings together 556 representatives -292 men and 262 women- from 93 nations, all in search of points for the world ranking (WR).
After a day with no Cuban presence, Maylin will face in the first round of preliminaries of the 63 kilograms (kg) against the Croatian Katarina Kristo, in search of victories that will guarantee her a place on the podium, after two failed attempts with Jonathan Charon (60 kg) and Orlando Polanco (66 kg).
Charon lost in the first bout and Polanco - number 54 in the WR, achieved a meritorious fifth place - bronze medal - after losing by Ippon in Golden Rule against the Japanese Hifumi Abe, Olympic champion of Paris 2024, with stage in the Papp Laszló Arena.
The nine disciples of Julio Alderete and Boannys Chang, heads of the men's and women's national teams, in that order, supported by trainer Antonio Becali (m) and doctor Edel Robaina, are completed with Zail Ramirez (100 kg) and Jonathan Loynaz (+100 kg) and Andy Granda (+100 kg), world champion in Tashkent 2022 and fifth (bronze) in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
They will be joined by Lianet Cardona (78 kg), Lisitrialis Gonzalez (78 kg) and Dayanara Curbelo (+78 kg).
The individual tournament program will continue, in that order, with the 90 and 70 kg, 100 and 78 kg, and +100 and +78 kg bouts.
