Cuba remembers boxer Teofilo Stevenson on anniversary of his death

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 11 (ACN) In a post on X, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz highlighted the life and legacy of three-time Olympic and world boxing champion Teofilo Stevenson on the 13th anniversary of his death, describing him as one of the greatest boxers in history who deserves, as Fidel Castro Ruz said, the recognition of the people for his achievements in sports and his discipline, dedication, courage and moral values.

On his end, Roberto Morales Ojeda, Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, also posted a message in which he referred to Stevenson as a paradigm of patriotism and loyalty to his people, who will never forget him.

Also on X, Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo, national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution―Cuba’s largest mass organization―and Teresa Amarelle Boué, general secretary of the Federation of Cuban Women, praised Stevenson, calling him “great among the greats” and “a loyal Cuban patriot”.

Born in Puerto Padre, Las Tunas province, on March 29, 1952, Teófilo Stevenson won 301 of the 321 bouts he fought in his 20-year-long career.

When he retired in 1988, he worked for and became vice president of the Cuban Boxing Federation, as well as for National Commission of Services for Retired and Active Athletes of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation.

Stevenson died of a heart attack in Havana on June 11, 2012.
