Cuba strengthens its position in international weightlifting



HAVANA, Cuba, May 27 (ACN) Cuba strengthens its presence in world weightlifting with the election of three of its representatives in key commissions of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) during the Electoral Congress held this weekend in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Ph.D Jorge Luis Barcelan Santa Cruz, president of the Cuban Federation, was appointed to the IWF Training and Research Committee for the 2025-2029 term.

Meanwhile, Dr. Yamil Gutierrez Jorge, a specialist in sports medicine, will be a member of the Medical Committee, while international referee Delmis Rodriguez Pargas will be part of the Gender Equity Commission.

These appointments recognize the experience and commitment of Cuban professionals in the development of weightlifting at the global level.

At the same congress, the delegates re-elected the Iraqi Mohammed Jalood president of the IWF for a second term, with 168 votes in favor.

In addition, the International Federation informed that the Peruvian Jose Quiñones will assume the position of secretary general, while the US Ursula Papandrea will continue as first vice president.

Mohammed Al-Harbi, from Saudi Arabia, and Chengliang Liu, from China, will occupy the additional vice presidencies.

Cuban weightlifting community celebrates these achievements, which strengthen the influence of the Caribbean island in the strategic decisions of the sport at the international level.
