HAVANA, Cuba will participate from today until Sunday in the Sprint Canoe World Cup in Szeged, Hungary, with its four main athletes of this modality, led by Yurisleidis Cirilo Dubois, bronze medalist at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.
According to Alejandro Hamze, president and national commissioner of canoeing - canoe and kayak - told the Cuban News Agency before the quartet left for the venue, Cirilo, world champion in the single-seater canoe (C-1) at 200 meters in Duisburg, in which she also won bronze in the Parisian multisport event, will only compete in the C-1.
He added that along with Cirilo will be Jose Ramon Pelier, tenth place -first in the final B- in the City of Light in the C-1 to 1,000 meters, and Yisnoly Francesca Lopez, eighth place in the C-2 to 500 meters in the company of Cirilo.
Yisnoly will now be accompanied in the C-2 to 500 meters by the also young Diogirna Castillo Dubois, while Pelier will also do it in the five thousand meters, non-Olympic distance, but very good for the preparation of canoeists'.
Once the competition is over, they will participate next week in the World Cup in Poznan, Poland, also directed by coach Jose Ramon Paula, supported by the Olympic title holder Serguey Torres.
The organizers of the event announced that 547 canoeists from 44 countries will compete in Szeged, the first stage of the World Cups, with the presence of several Olympic and world medalists.
The aim of Cubans is to achieve the optimum form to participate in the World Championship in Milan, Italy, from August 20 to 24.
