HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 14 (ACN) Leandro Civil Jarvis, an emblematic personality of Cuban athletics, died today in Havana at the age of 77, informed sports authorities of the archipelago.
Osvaldo Vento Montiller, president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder by its Spanish acronym), declared on X: "We accompany his loved ones and honor his work, built with passion and patriotism. May his legacy inspire new generations". Our most sincere condolences to family and friends, the body stated in another post.
In the same social network, the Inder highlighted the performance of Civil Jarvis, glory of Cuban sport, as a Pan American and Central Caribbean medalist runner, and his beautiful work as a coach, with pupils such as Ana Fidelia Quiros and Roberto Hernandez.
Cuban Athletics Federation also highlighted the "eternal contribution" to the sport of Civil Jarvis, born in Puerto Padre, Las Tunas province, who left a legacy as an athlete and coach, consolidating himself as a pillar of the development of national athletics.
As a middle-distance runner, he dominated the 800 meters: he broke the national record twice and won gold in the Central American and Caribbean Games of Santo Domingo 1974.
After retiring as a runner, Civil Jarvis became a key coach; he trained stars such as Ana Fidelia Quiros, double world champion and Olympic medalist in Atlanta 1996.
