HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 13 (ACN) In a post on X, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel celebrated that all five Cubans who competed in the professional match Cuban Boxing Night, held on Friday at the Meliá Internacional hotel in Varadero, won their fights.
Díaz-Canel called it a historic night for Cuban boxing, in reference to Yakelín Estornell (66.6 kg) who achieved a TKO victory over the Dominican Lina Tejeda and became the first Cuban woman to notch up a win in professional boxing.
The head of state applauded the performance of Lázaro Álvarez (61.3 kg), Erislandy Álvarez (63.5 kg), Julio C. La Cruz (101.6 kg), and Arlen López (79.3 kg).
The event, which gathered boxers from the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Montenegro, and Morocco, was the first of its kind held in Cuba in the last six decades.
