Cuba hosts professional boxing event in Varadero today

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 11 (ACN) Everything is ready for today's professional boxing card in Varadero, made up of six fights, five men's and one women's, to be held at the Meliá Internacional Hotel with the support of the AGON Sports promoter.

With the approval of the participants by the result of the weigh-in, the last step was fulfilled on Thursday for them to enter into action in the ring, from 7:00 p.m., a bout that will be held for the first time in Cuba.

Shortly after, Alberto Puig de la Barca, president of the Cuban Boxing Federation, gave a conference in which he thanked AGON Sports for choosing the island for a historic event.

Puig recalled that there will be five World Boxing Association (WBA) belts in dispute, in addition to the semifinal for the universal belt of that entity with the presence of two-time Olympic champion Julio Cesar La Cruz and Montenegrin Dilan Prasovic.

Ingo Volckmann, director of AGON Sports, considered the event "a dream come true", joined in the praise for the host organizers and said that another event of this type could take place in December.

Among the men's bouts, the one that will feature Julio Cesar La Cruz stands out, an expectation that is joined by the debut at this level of the host Yakelin Estornell.

La Cruz, two-time Olympic champion, will face Montenegrin Dilan Prasovic in 12 rounds, while Yakelin, bronze medalist in the Central American and Caribbean Games, will face Dominican Lina Tejeda in four rounds.

Among the attractions are also the men's 10-round bouts, with the presence of Cuban Arlen Lopez, double Olympic titleholder, Erislandy Alvarez, current champion under the five rings in Paris 2024, and Lazaro Alvarez, Olympic bronze medalist.

The bout also includes two visitors, the Moroccan Moussa Ghalom and the Dominican, who will cross gloves in search of the World Boxing Association's continental gold crown for the Americas.
